Rubber gym flooring: what thickness to choose for each zone

One of the most common mistakes when fitting out a fitness room is installing the same tile thickness across the whole floor. The cardio area's flooring doesn't need to withstand the same loads as a weightlifting platform.

Cardio and general strength area

With foot traffic and fixed machines, a 10-15 mm tile is usually enough. It adds comfort, reduces footstep noise and protects the slab without needing extra thickness.

Free-weight and lifting area

If the zone is used for deadlifts or Olympic lifts, the recommended minimum thickness rises to 20-30 mm, and competition platforms can go up to 40 mm or more. The goal isn't just protecting the floor — it also cushions impact for the user's joints.

Functional and CrossFit zones

CrossFit boxes usually combine both worlds in the same space: running, jumping, medicine ball throws and lifting. Here it's common to install 20 mm tiles across the whole room and reinforce the barbell area with thicker tiles or dedicated platforms.

What happens if you choose too thin

Besides the risk of damaging the slab, insufficient thickness shows up fast: the rubber compresses unevenly, permanent marks appear under fixed machines, and impact noise to other floors increases over time.
