Signs your treadmill needs urgent maintenance

Signs your treadmill needs urgent maintenance

The treadmill is, by far, the machine that takes the most punishment in any fitness room. It's also the one that shows signs of poor maintenance the fastest: by the time it actually breaks down, it's usually been warning you for weeks.

A noise that wasn't there before

A squeak, a rhythmic thud or a new hum almost always comes from the belt, the rollers or the motor. The sooner it gets checked, the cheaper the fix: a worn roller is a quick swap, but leave it and it eventually damages the whole belt.

The belt slips or feels "loose"

If the belt slides under your foot while running, it probably needs tensioning or lubrication. Running it like that wears the motor out faster, since it has to compensate for the slip with more power.

Vibration in the frame

A new vibration usually means something has loosened in the structure, or the shock absorbers have lost their stiffness. In high-traffic gyms this can happen within a few months.

The console glitches or resets on its own

Electrical issues aren't always the board's fault: sometimes it's a cable pinched by daily use, built-up moisture, or a dirty speed sensor. It's worth checking before replacing the whole console.

When to call a technician

As a rule of thumb: if the fault affects user safety (a slipping belt, unresponsive speed, an unstable frame), stop the machine and call. The rest of the signs can wait for a scheduled visit, but the sooner they're caught, the fewer parts need replacing.

A preventive maintenance contract catches most of these signs before they become a real problem. If you'd rather get ahead of it, take a look at our maintenance service.
